The Russian affiliate of SonyBMG plans to license its entire catalogue to legal download services in Russia. "Regarding physical records, Russia's piracy obsessed market is irretrievably lost. If there is any potential left, then it's the download and digital music market" SonyBMG managing director Denis Komarovsky stated today.
According to this decision SonyBMG is the first major record label releasing its entire catalogue for digital distribution in Russia. The yet different legal position deters western holders of music rights from bringing music to market as illegal piracy-based services, like for example AllOfMP3.com, operate almost unopposed. Before SonyBMG only US distributor The Orchard dared to license its full catalogue. Komarovsky though deems nowadays legal positon regarding copyrights and licensing as turn for the better (regarding record companies, of course).
Futhermore there are urgent requests from legitimate download services on hand. Yanga! or Audiofind already approached SonyBMG to negotiate about basic terms and conditions. First details already trickled through as for example the estimated price per tracks shall be about 60 Cent.
