Chicago Police and Cook County prosecutors raided Pure Entertainment's Near North Side offices on Wednesday, January 24, 2007.
According to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times, the three of Pure Entertainment's executives have been charged with theft for allegedly bilking some of the local clubs they promote, including Crobar and Vision.
The paper also reports that Jay Prasad, president of Pure Entertainment, plotted with vice president John Curley and events director Lucas King to steal more than USD $100,000 over the past year, authorities said. Then they would allegedly forge contracts for a higher amount with the venues and skim the difference.
Besides its heavy stake in Chicago's UR Magazine, Pure Entertainment also owns PureFuture.com, a leading web site that lets local clubbers know the happenings around town. The popular PF message board was removed from the site immediately following the arrests, so no open and documented discussion between members of the nightlife community has taken place.
The "Windy City" nightlife wouldn't quite be what it is today without Pure Entertainment, but now after the arrests and charges, it might have to make do.

Here is the scoop... Pure was negotiating deals with booking agencies and talent managers to bring people to Chicago to perform in clubs. They would get the contract as a .PDF, then they would edit the PDF (which is a legal contract), print it out, bring it to the club with the marked-up price, and collect the "premium" price that would charge the club. They would also get the pre-agreed upon "finders fee" that went along with the booking. They have been skimming money like this for years, and it is unreal that they just got caught. Pure deserves to go under. From the cocky additude that both Prasad and Curley had (lucas king is actually a good guy who was probably roped into this while thing). Besides, pure owes money to everyone and thier brother, and would always complain about not having enough cash to pay employees and vendors, while the skimming was going on. Let's see if the cops can find the hidden "cash account" that Jay Prasad has set up! |

I don't know Jay Prasad or Lucas King. I do know John Curley. I do know that John Curley is a good guy and was always on the up and up. I consider him a friend. My belief and my hope is that the facts will clear Curley of any wrong doing. Remember, in America, innocent until proven guilty. |

Has there been any recent news on this? I too am a friend of John's but I live in NY and haven't been able to get in touch. I am choosing to believe the best. |

Re: John Curley. Are you serious? Curley was as in on the dealings as Jay prasad was. If anyone was not guilty and made to do anything it was Lucas King from Relode. But John Curley, nice or not, might have been nice to you over drinks or toots... but the reality is that his lifestyle was being paid for at the expense of others. He was the instigator, don't you know. |
