FabricLive 32 - Tayo

January 3, 2007  |  By Sotek  |  0 Comments

200701_fabriclive32_tayo.jpgLondon-based DJ and producer Tayo stands proudly in the middle of contemporary bass culture and connects the dots - dubstep, baile funk, breakbeat and electro - to form the upfront sound of London’s underground.

On FabricLive 32, Tayo flexes his sharp taste in music to show how, in one way or another, every track is laid out on a common ground and stamped with derivatives, breaking beats and barriers to prove that he cannot be branded with or simplified by the obligation and repression of musical genres. His mix features cuts from the likes of Skream, Bassbin Twins, Digital Mystikz, Rob Smith, Benga, as well as some of his own productions.

Tayo explains:

"This mix is a celebration of breakbeat culture and bass culture. It's me being into everything and trying to make it make sense over 70 minutes. You open yourself up to flack from the genre police, but I'm doing what I like and so be it. I am happy with the music I listen to and my route into it. That's what I'm hoping will come across in this mix."

Being involved in the UK breakbeat scene for ten years, Tayo (his full name is Tayo Popoola) started with a club called Friction he ran with Adam Freeland and Rennie Pilgrem. He left in 2004 to do his own thing - making records, presenting radio and playing tunes all around the globe. Currently he runs periodical parties at Fabric in London called "Cool & Deadly."
