What was supposed to be a happy occasion turned into a tragedy for the friends and family of Orlando Valle.
Valle had been celebrating his 35th birthday at the West Chelsea nightclub BED on West 27th Street, but then an argument with club employees led to his fatal fall from the sixth floor on top of the elevator car between the first and second floors.
The accident occurred shortly after 4 AM on Saturday, February 3 after the rumble between Valle and a club floor manager Granville Adams near the coat-check counter at the club. NY Post reports that as the two sparred, Valle was knocked into the closed elevator door so hard that the bottom edge slipped off its runner and swung inward, sending him plummeting to his death. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A spokeswoman for the NYC Buildings Department said the elevator had previously passed all necessary inspections. Adams, who had portrayed Zahir Arif on the HBO series "Oz," was charged with criminally negligent homicide for his role in the incident.
Valle, who had served time for a drug dealing conviction, leaves behind a 13-year old son, Jordan.
