After months of flirtation with closing, all of the rumors, the police actions, the schedule changes, the drama and more drama, at last it is now official: legendary New York City nightclub Roxy will close its doors for good on March 10, shortly before the building is set to be demolished in order to make room for new residential apartments.
Originally a truck warehouse, Roxy has a been a staple of Manhattan nightlife for almost two decades. Located in the West Chelsea section of Manhattan at 515 West 18th Street, it began as a roller skating rink and still hosts skating one or two nights a week, but beginning in the early 1980s, the owners began hosting dance nights, including breakdancing competitions.
Over the years, Roxy has hosted virtually every pop star, including Madonna, Cher, Bette Midler, etc., as well as countless world-renowned DJs: Junior Vasquez, Peter Rauhofer, Paul van Dyk, Victor Calderone and others.
The club was also featured in the classic 80's breakdancing movie Beat Street (1984). Many of the film's dance sequences were filmed at the club.
