Ulrich Schnauss releases Goodbye

April 08, 2007  |  By Sotek  |  1 Comments

200704_ulrich_schnauss_goodbye.jpgGerman electronic artist and producer Ulrich Schnauss will release his long-awaited third artist album, Goodbye, through Independiente / Domino Records (US) in July.

After a considerable amount of tracks released under numerous aliases, Schnauss' 2001 debut Far Away Trains Passing By slowly seeped into peoples' consciousness and became an electronic classic. In 2003 he released A Strangely Isolated Place - an album which has become a genuinely word-of-mouth record that truly established Schnauss as an outstanding electronic composer.

According to Schnauss, Goodbye is the end of a chapter in his sound. "I see these three albums as moving closer to something I wanted to do right from the beginning but didn't quite manage," he says. "Merging songwriting and indie elements with electronic music. I've tried to take all the ideas to the maximum."

Tired of the Berlin scene, Schnauss moved back to his hometown of Kiel to record Goodbye. In a recent interview with Billboard he admits that "up until last summer, I was really unhappy with this record and really frustrated. I almost gave up on it. But in the last five or six months, I got it right, and now I'm very pleased with the results."

His last two album titles spoke of isolation and his third LP is equally ambivalent. "Emotionally, I find farewell situations interesting," he says. "Saying goodbye can be tragic or hopeful."

Quicksand Memory EP will precede Goodbye, due May 22. The EP features an edit of "Medusa", a collaboration with Rob McVey of Longview titled "Look At The Sky" and Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) re-workings of two of Schnauss' most celebrated songs from A Strangely Isolated Place, "Gone Forever" and "On My Own".

I eagerly awaited this album. Those riffs and multi layered harmonies... Wow!!!! To me he's the Beethoven of electronica: a master of dramatic but yet fine and detailed sounds. I am not a fan of vocals, but the way how he's applying and integrating vocals is just amazing and attests Ulrich's music perception. And those multi layered harmonies....... :-) Superb!
