Burial releases Untrue

After the massive success of his self-titled debut, the mysterious Burial will release an eagerly anticipated follow up, Untrue, on Kode9's Hyperdub imprint next month.

London-based Burial is one of those rare breed of acts who prefer to stay in shadows and focus on making quality records rather than exposure. He refuses to reveal his true identity or play live and rarely grants interviews. As he puts it: "I'm not that kind of person who can step up. I just want to make tunes." In the end it all seems to be working out for him that way. His critically acclaimed debut — now widely regarded as the flagship release of the increasingly popular 'dubstep' genre — appeared in many 'best of 2006' polls and earned a few hi-profile awards along the way, including album of the year in The Guardian and Wire.

Judging by the recent exclusive preview on Mary Anne Hobbs' BBC Radio 1 show, the sound of Untrue continues from where the debut left off. Expect 13 'weird' tracks filled with blurred and smeared voices, drenched sounds, ambient textures, broken beats and deep basslines.

Burial tells Kode9 in an interview:

"This one [the new LP] is a bit more buzzin', glowy. It's a bit more uplifting. It doesn't hang around. It's a bit more up. The tunes were made quite fast in the middle of the night and they had to fight for their right to exist. but they came out of nowhere. Its a bit like an unwanted pregnancy, I wasn't always in a good place, but most of the tunes had to be faith restoring somehow to me, but they still take a while to get into."

The album will be available in two formats: a CD digipack and a nine track DJ-friendly 2x12" LP with a different track order from which, according to the press release, "some of the beatless pieces have been edited." Stay tuned.
