I stumbled upon this ongoing discussion over at 4four regarding to the future of DJing. This post from one of the members caught my eye instantly:
"It's funny. I just went through almost 3 straight years of buying digital for the most part, but I've been buying mainly vinyl since about March... I just love playing vinyl - end of. As far as the future of DJing, I don't know what more you could do to 'push DJing forward' without making it not DJing anymore. [...] Funnily enough, it seems the more a 'DJ' adds to his or her technical repetoire, the less solid the performance gets, in most cases anyway."
Here's the money line:
"Anytime I've seen a DJ absolutely kill it lately, it's been using 2 decks and a mixer..."
Don't you agree?
I really think it's how you use our downloads compared to vinyl. I just turned over to digital in the last 2 months and actually today is the day I start using Serato. The way I categorize my music is the same mindset as how I would do it when I used only vinyl. I hope this way that I can still retain the essence of a good set.
Whats kinda interesting when ppl discuss the future of DJing there's always a missed focus...
Do people really care if you play vinyl, cd or from a laptop? Isnt the whole thing bout getting the floor in a good mood? I serious doubt that people care what you use to get them going...
Besides... Cd has its advantages and disadvantages... So does vinyl and laptops... The future I think is to focus more on the floor then the technical aspect of DJing...
this is so old (I blogged about this back in early 2007: http://www.friskygeek.com/2007/02/06/1265/ ) but its still very very cool!
@frisky: I know man, it's nothing new. The pic is for illustration purposes only 8)
i often notice that a dj who is playing vinyl or cds has more interaction with the crowd and what is going on in the room. laptop djs on the other hand seem to spend so much freakin time with the laptop they spend less time mixing feeling the crowd. so i do think it affects the mood what media you use. i think choosing a certain medium does create more potential for less interaction. with vinyl, its so simple, grab the record, put it on. you can look at the crowd, you can see the grooves...
